Snoring Solutions

Snoring is a disorder that affects about one third of the population according to a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).  Snoring is not only problematic for the person actually snoring, but can be a cause of insomnia for those of us who have to sleep with the snorer.  Luckily, there are many solutions to the snoring problem, one of which may just be what you need to get a better night’s sleep.

A study done by the National Sleep Foundation found that 77% of overweight adults had some type of sleep problem, snoring is just one of the problems.  These problems occur because the excess weight can put unnecessary pressure on the airway, especially when sleeping.  This can lead to a far more dangerous problem, sleep apnea, which can be potentially fatal.  The obvious solution to this problem is to lose the excess weight through diet and exercise; this may be easier said than done, but will not only lead to better sleep, but a healthier person overall.

Not only is smoking a nasty, dangerously unhealthy habit, it can be one of the causes of snoring.  Smoking can cause inflammation and swelling of the air passages which can make it difficult to breathe, therefore causing snoring.  Better sleep is just one benefit of not smoking, so if you still smoke, now is the time to quit.

Allergies are another cause of snoring, if you have breathing problems during waking hours they will only get worse when you lie down to sleep.  If your allergy symptoms are something as simple as nasal congestion, an over-the-counter decongestant may do the trick; these medications open nasal passages and allow for smoother airflow.  An air filter in the bedroom may help filter out allergens making it easier to breathe.

The position in which you sleep may be the cause of your snoring; sleeping on your back allows your tongue to rest against the back of your throat, restricting the air passage; thus causing snoring.  Raising your head a bit may help alleviate this problem or change sleeping positions; try sleeping on your side.

Sleeping medication or excessive use of alcohol will cause snoring to be worse.  Many people think that having several drinks before bed or taking a sleeping pill will cause them to sleep better, this is not the case.  Excessive alcohol consumption or sleeping pills can exacerbate your snoring condition.

Snoring can be an annoying or even dangerous problem; the solutions mentioned above are just some simple things you can do to relieve snoring.  If your snoring continues after you have given these solutions a try, it may be time to seek professional help.
